The truth about teeth: Baby vs. Adult

There are a total of 20 baby teeth — 10 on the top, 10 on the bottom. For most kids, baby teeth are usually present by age two, begin to fall out by age six and are completely gone by age 13. But keep in mind that when it comes to teeth, everyone is different. In fact, even kids in the same family can have wildly different tooth schedules. If a child’s teeth seem to be significantly delayed — either coming in or falling out — it’s important to check in with a dentist.

There are a total of 32 adult teeth, although the wisdom teeth don’t appear until age 18. The first permanent teeth to replace baby teeth are the two lower front teeth. This usually happens around age six. They typically come in on the tongue side of the front teeth and the tongue helps move them forward. The second permanent teeth to come in are the “six year” molars, which also generally appear around age six. They are located in the back of the mouth and do not replace any baby teeth.
